Beekeeping in Orange County and Surrounding Areas since 1961
The Southeastern Beekeepers Club was formed January 1961 by twenty residents of Orange and Sussex Counties. The purpose of the club is to educate and support beekeepers and those interested in honeybees and beekeeping. Our current membership includes beginners and experienced men, women and children of all ages. Our experienced beekeepers bring several hundred years of knowledge, experience and dedication to the membership, and the beginners bring a desire to learn and carry on the hobby of beekeeping. The club meets at Cornell Cooperative Extension, 18 Seward Avenue, 3rd floor, Community Campus, Middletown, N.Y., on the third Saturday of each month 7pm-9pm October through April. During these meetings, the club holds a short business meeting and then moves to discussions and/or instructions on the various aspects and current issues of beekeeping and honeybees. During warmer weather, May through September, meetings are held at members' homes on Saturdays or Sundays. At these meetings, the membership provides a pot-luck lunch and discusses some club business. After lunch, the club’s more experienced members inspect the host’s beehives and comment on the condition and health of the hive and what, if anything, can be done to improve the hive management. The Southeastern Beekeepers Club encourages new members and beginning beekeepers to avail themselves of all the club has to offer. Our experienced members share their experience and wisdom at monthly meetings. The club provides beginner beekeeping classes, a monthly newsletter, discounts on the two major beekeeping magazines, mentoring, and an extensive print and visual media lending library. As the club marks its 50th anniversary in 2011, we remain committed to our goal of educating other beekeepers and sharing the joys and benefits of beekeeping with the general public.
